Where is the summer going?

I cannot believe that the first week of July is gone! We have been so busy the past month that I feel like summer is going way too fast! Here is a quick update on the Oakey family!

Trip to the Hogle Zoo

My mom and I decided to take a trip to the Hogle Zoo which was really a fun day. Ryan wasn't sure what to think about all of it but either way it was a fun outing for the three of us.

Basketball tournament in St. George
The basketball team that I am coaching had a tournament in St. George the middle of June. Matt wanted to come down with Ryan and I but couldn't take a week of work off so my mom came down and babysat Ryan in the hotel while I coached. I definately couldn't have done it with out her help!!! It was great weather and Ryan loved his little floaty in the pool.

Our trip to Spokane

For over a year now we have been planning a trip to Spokane, Washington to visit my brother and his wife and daughter. It was so fun to see them and watch Ryan and Brynn play together! The boys all played in the biggest 3 0n 3 basketball tournament in the world (which happens to be 10 minutes from Adam's house) so we watched them do that. Adam, Drew, Matt, and John (one of Drew's college buddies) played and did a great job!

After the basketball was finished we we all packed up and drove about an hour to a nearby lake. Adam's good friends were nice enough to let us all go to their families lake house which was literally built right on the water. We had a blast. Adam brought his boat and his friends brought jet skiis. We all wakeboarded (some better than others) and just played for 4 days. Thanks Adam and Noelle and Brad and Sherri for all of your planning this last week!

The 4th of July in Pocatello
On our way back to Salt Lake we stopped in Boise for a night and then spent the 4th of July weekend in Pocatello with my grandparents. My dad and uncle always play in the annual Best Ball golf tournament at the golf course there and this year Matt and Drew decided to give it a try. We had a great time with family over the 4th and Pocatello puts on a great firework show too!!!

Update on Ryan
Ryan is 8 1/2 months old now and weighs about 21 pounds. He has developed quite the personality that is for sure! He has 4 teeth now and is on the verge of crawling forward. He has recently learned to crawl backwards but for some reason can't quite figure out the forward motion. He just learned how to clap his hands which is really cute too! Other than that he is just a lot of fun!

"I Run for Callie!"

A few months ago I posted that Matt's sister had been diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer. Callie has Hodgkins Lymphoma and has 4 (out of her 12) chemo treatments left. She is such an amazing person and someone that we have all learned so much from. She also had started running and really loved it before she was diagnosed. With all this said, this past Sunday Matt's other sister and I decided that we should all run in the Art City Day's 5K in her honor. So we quickly ordered shirts (in the Lymphoma colors) and organized a big group of family members to run "for her." This was not hard to find plenty of people to run and we had so much fun doing it. She had no idea that we were planning it. Her husband and kids somehow got her in the car by 730am and they parked their car so they could watch all the runners. What was really amazing is that Callie had a dream two nights ago and told her mom and daughter that she dreamed she was running in this race today. So it was perfect that the shirts said "I Run for Callie." All in all she was very suprised and touched by this small gesture. We stopped at her car to give her a hug and she started crying and was so happy to see all of us running for her.

We really did have a fun morning. My mom and dad came down and ran with us, Ryan got to ride in the stroller (that grandma and grandpa pushed) and Matt and I ran as well. Matt did really well and ran the whole way (without any training :) ) I actually ended up walking with Callie's two kids the second half of the race but it was great!!!

Ryan has developed quite the laugh. He will smile and literally "laugh out loud" at almost anyone or anything if he is in the right mood. I have been meaning to post this video for a while but I have obviously been a little behind. We have recorded him a few times but this is so funny I had to post it even though it was almost 2 months ago. For some reason he likes to be scared when you are playing with him. He jumps like it scares him but then just laughs at you. We will try and get some more recent videos posted so you can see Ryan in action. He is quite the character.

OUR LITTLE RY IS GROWING UP!

This week Ryan had his 6 month appointment. We have been so excited to see how much he has grown in the past two months. We are amazed at how fast time is flying by. It seems like yesterday I was writing about the countdown to his arrival and now we have a little boy who loves his veggies, splashes in the tub, likes to put the laundry basket on his head, says "da-da" and "ba-ba" (this one is new as of today), and has a bottom tooth that is literally about to pop through his gums. Did I mention that fact that he has a smile and a laugh that will literally melt your heart...it is so dang cute! Anyways, we are so proud of our little guy! Here are his stats from his appointment this month:

Height: 28 inches (90%)

Weight: 18 pounds 10 ounces (65%)

Head Circumference: 46.3 centimeters (more than 95%)

Where do I begin....Sorry this is a long one :)

So I figured that I should post something since I rambled and complained in my last post and that was almost a month ago. The good news is that Ryan is finally sleeping most of the night. He sleeps from about 9ish to around 430 or so then goes back to sleep until about 7. We are just fine with this schedule but we are also jealous of those of you who have kids who sleep for 12 hours a night....crazy!!!! Thanks to everyone's helpful advice and encouragment! The bad news is that he has only been doing this for a few nights so we are still trying to catch up on our sleep.

Our lives have been full of excitement the past month. We moved the first week of April to our new house which was so exciting! We found a foreclosure in Spanish Fork and really got lucky with it. Apparently it was so dirty and beat up that the bank actually painted and put new appliances, carpet, and flooring in so it feels like a brand new home. We are so blessed to get into a home that we really love! It is also such a relief to not be renting anymore! We definately were ready to be done with small apartments.

Ryan is growing so fast. He just had his 6 month birthday this week and it is unbelievable that he has been in our family for 6 months. He smiles all the time, loves green beans and carrots, and for some odd reason he likes to be scared by his dad. He absolutely loved his Easter basket too which was really cute. I am not sure if it is because of the bright colors or what but he dove right in! We also hosted our first Sunday dinner on Easter Sunday. We had a BBQ and my parents, Drew, Bret, Jan, and Bella all came over. It was really fun to actually have a place for everyone.

My mom and I made a trip through Idaho over Spring Break. We spent a few days in Boise and stopped in Pocatello on the way home. For some reason, Ryan always clicks with his grandparents. He absolutely loves his grandma and grandpa Dodo and his grandma and grandpa "Moose." He is so smiley with them it is great!

Other than that, our lives are busy. We are rarely home but we love spending time with our family. It is so nice to have both of our families so close to us. Matt shaved his head (all of the boys did it for his sister with cancer) and really loves it so he keeps telling me he is going to keep it that way, but I am not really sold on the idea. Oh yeah, I only have 7 days of teaching before summer....but who is counting?!?

SLEEP DEPRIVED!!!!!

So Matt and I have decided that we are desperate! I am posting this because our sweet little boy who we love so very much, is about to drive us crazy!!! Granted he is only 5 months old and he can't talk but that is besides that matter. For the first 3 months of Ryan's life, he was a great sleeper. He usually woke up once a night to eat anywhere from 2am to about 4am. I was totally fine and I could handle waking up once to feed the little guy. Now as great as that was, 2 short months later, we are experiencing a couple weeks of absolutely NO SLEEP! Ryan now goes to bed around 9 or 930 (which has always been his bedtime) but wakes up at midnight, 2 am, 4 am, and usually about 6 am. WHY?!? We need sleep too!

Now if you can't tell, I am a little bugged by the recent happenings in the Oakey home. I didn't realize how bugged I was until I went to pick up Ryan from Bret and Jan's house (they were so kind to babysit today) and they informed me that Bella, who is two months younger than Ryan, is sleeping 9 hours a night! What is this all about? I talked to Jan and got a few ideas that might help but I am desperately searching for advice from all experienced moms! I feel like we are trying everything that every book says. He falls asleep on his own, in his crib, he doesn't use a pacifier to fall asleep, he weighs like 20 pounds (so you would think he could go more than a few hours without food), and we have the same routine every night. The only hard thing is, is that we live in a building with neighbors on all sides. We are afraid to really let him cry at 2 am in fear of waking up the baby below us.

Now I like to think of myself as a humble person so I will not be offended by any advice or criticism and I would love to hear exactly what everyone has to say on the subject! I will try anything at this point! We just need sleep!!!!!!!

When it comes to college sports in Utah, there are two types of fans....Utah fans and fans of that blue team! When I was playing basketball we would actually refer to them as either "The team down South," or "B Y Who?" Matt and I are definately fans of the Utes and make no mistake, Ryan will be too! Because we are living in Orem, it is really rare to find Utah fans so we make sure to state our opinion every opportunity we can, especially when the Utes are victorious! This past weekend both the men's and the women's basketball teams at Utah won the conference tournament so we were really excited. I guess we might be taking it a bit too far when we dress our 5 month old son in Utah church clothes too, but in a ward full of Cougar fans, we have to stand our ground! :) It is definately a good year to be a UTE!
